I used this lesson with 7th Grade and used it again for High Schoolers. Both results were a messy good time.

Objectives:

  • Students will discuss and take notes on the artist Claes Oldenburg and paper mache terms to be quizzed on later.

  • Students will work in two teams to create food sculptures representing food in American culture.

  • Students will create an individual food sculpture using paper mache and paint.

Essential Questions:

Artists oftentimes will use their artwork to make a statement about society and culture.

What does that mean?

What kind of cultural statement do you think could be made by creating our own food sculptures?

High School Healthy Team

Materials: Powerpoint presentation, newspapers, cardboard, balloons, paper mache paste, paint, brushes, watercups

Time: about 5-7 class periods

Instruction:

Present information on Claes Oldenburg. Students take notes on Oldenburg and definitions.

Students will divide into two teams (healthy foods and unhealthy foods) and record what each member is creating.

Students will create their armatures, mache them, paint them to look like realistic foods.

High School Unhealthy Team

Supplemental Activities:

Students will join their groups to figure out a menu layout and ideas. Students will write a creative paragraph to make the food that they created sound enticing to a hungry restaurant-go-er. Then students will type their paragraphs and illustrate a border. There will be one menu for each team.

On the High School level, this project aligned with a school wide initiative to read the book Chew On This: Everything You Don't Want to Know About Fast Food by Charles Wilson.
