DOCENT TRAINING

I have a range of experience in docent training. One example is from April and May of 2014. The Dixon Gallery and Gardens hired me to give two lectures on general art history as a part of their docent training program. The first emphasized the art movement and time period Rococo to 1850. The second covered the early 1900s-today. Pictured are the conclusion slides from these two lectures.

WRITING SAMPLES

When it comes to writing for public museum audiences, my experience lies in history and art history. One notable example is when I served as the Interim Director of Education, Interpretation, and Collections at the National Civil Rights Museum (April - September 2015). Part of the responsibilities was for exhibitions. One particular exhibition highlighted the art collection of local basketball star, Elliot Perry. I researched and wrote the introductory text and most of the exhibition labels. One of our tour guides showed an interest in writing for the show, so I recruited her help in the work. Each label was reviewed and approved by Perry who also decided the title of the exhibition.

In addition to the loan paperwork, inventory, and reception, I was also responsible for label design and ordering vinyl decals for the introductory text - pictured.

One of my former museum studies professors was so impressed with my work, he invited me to write the introductory essay on museum education for his book.
